The World Hakka Conference is one of the most influential Chinese events in the world. It is an important platform for Hakka folks at home and abroad to connect and conduct cross-border and cross-regional economic and cultural exchanges.
The World Hakka Conferences originated from the first World Hakka Conference held by the Hong Kong Tsung Tsin Association on September 28, 1971. It was held every two years in the 20th century and once every year since the 21st century. It has been held in 11 countries and regions on three continents: Asia, the United States, and Africa. The scale has gradually expanded. It has evolved from pure friendship reunion to an activity carrier integrating economic cooperation, cultural exchanges and academic seminars.
Origin of the event
The Hakka is an important and unique ethnic group of the Han nationality in the Chinese family. Since ancient times, it has formed a cultural spirit of unity, cooperation, and pioneering spirit. Due to historical reasons, the Hakka people have migrated all over the world. Hence the proverb “Wherever the sun shines, there are Chinese people; wherever the Chinese people are, there are Hakkas”.
In order to facilitate the communication between the villagers and the mutual assistance, especially the continuation and development of the Hakka culture, since the 20th century, many Hakka people of insight have actively explored and practiced to adapt to this requirement and purpose. Therefore, various Hakka associations and organizations of blood, geographical, ethnic and business relationships have been established all over the world, but they have not been able to form a suitable platform for friendship gatherings of Hakka folks around the world for a long time.
On September 28, 1971, the Hong Kong Tsung Tsin Association, the most influential Hakka organization in Hong Kong and even the Asia-Pacific region, celebrated its 50th anniversary and the inauguration of the “Tsung Tsin Building”, and invited 47 Hakka associations from all over the world. More than 250 representatives of the villagers held celebrations at the “International Restaurant” on Nathan Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong and in the “Hong Kong Tsung Tsin Association” Auditorium in Happy Valley. In the meantime, the delegates at the meeting decided to set this event as the “First World Hakka Conference”, where they decided to hold such conferences in relevant cities around the world every one to two years.
The World Hakka Conferences embrace the basic guiding ideology of “promoting the Hakka spirit, enhancing the unity of Hakkas at home and abroad, promoting economic cooperation and cultural exchanges, and advancing the peaceful reunification of the motherland”.
The role of the World Hakka Conference has become increasingly prominent and its influence has become increasingly widespread. It has become a well-known event to promote the national spirit, spread the Chinese culture, and build relationships within the Hakka communities. For a long time, hundreds of millions of Hakka folks all over the world have played an active role in achieving prosperity in their respective countries. I hope that the Hakka folks at home and abroad will uphold the fine traditions, remember their roots, love their hometowns, unite and forge ahead, continue to care and support China’s construction and development and make new changes and further contributions to the great cause of China’s peaceful reunification and revival of the great Chinese nation.
During the event, the Hakka compatriots from all over the world seek friendships, exchanges, cooperation, and common development, which are of great significance for communicating the world’s Hakka ties, enhancing the cohesion of the Chinese nation, and promoting global alliances. On October 29, 2015, the world’s first Hakka pride and national heroes Sun Zhong San and He Ziyuan’s copper statues were completed in Mainland China.
